Background: PRESIDENT ALPHONSE MASSAMBA-DEBAT OF CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE ON FRIDAY (10 MAY) ARRIVED IN LUSAKA ON AN INFORMAL, TWO-DAY VISIT TO ZAMBIA. THE VISITING PRESIDENT WAS MET AT LUSAKA'S INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA AND MEMBERS OF HIS CABINET. PRESIDENT MASSAMBA-DEBAT WAS ACCORDED A 21-GUN SALUTE AS HE STEPPED FROM THE AIRCRAFT.

AFTER INSPECTING THE GUARD OF HONOUR, MOUNTED BY MEMBERS OF THE ZAMBIAN ARMY, PRESIDENT MASSAMBA-DEBAT WAS INTRODUCED TO MEMBERS OF THE ZAMBIAN CABINET BY THE FOREIGN MINISTER, REUBEN KAMANGA.

TRIBAL DANCERS PERFORMED ON THE TARMAC, IN A SPECIAL DANCE TO WELCOME ZAMBIA'S GUEST. PRESIDENT MASSAMBA-DEBAT SHOWED GREAT INTEREST IN THE DANCERS AND APPLAUDED THEM HEARTILY.

THE VISITING PRESIDENT'S FIRST OFFICIAL FUNCTION IN LUSAKA WAS A CONDUCTED TOUR OF THE TOBACCO AUCTION FLOOR. HERE, HE WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO INSPECT SOME SAMPLES OF THE TOBACCO ON SALE. TOBACCO GROWING IN ZAMBIA IS REPORTED TO HAVE BECOME ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AN INDUSTRY AS COPPER MINING.

HOWEVER, THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY IS AT PRESENT IN DANGER OF CLOSING BECAUSE OF THE LOW PRICES OFFERED BY BUYERS THIS SEASON. IN THE FIRST WEEK AND A HALF OF SALES IN LUSAKA, PRICES OFFERED WERE SO LOW THAT ANGRY AND DISAPPOINTED FARMERS HAVE THREATENED TO DISCONTINUE THEIR CROPS NEXT SEASON. THE TOBACCO AUCTION FLOOR WILL BE CLOSED NEXT WEEK, WHILE GROWERS AND BUYERS NEGOTIATE IN THE HOPE OF REACHING AGREEMENT.

PRESIDENT MASSAMBA-DEBAT, WITH HIS HOST PRESIDENT KAUNDA, INSPECTED ALL DEPARTMENTS OF THE AUCTION FLOORS AND SHOWED A GREAT INTEREST DURING THE TOUR.

THE TWO PRESIDENTS WERE DUE TO TRAVEL TOGETHER TO DAR-ES-SALAAM, TANZANIA, TODAY (SUNDAY) TO ATTEND THE SUMMIT CONFERENCE OF EAST AND CANTR AFRICAN LEADERS.
