  • Description

Israeli tanks are standing by in the Beisan Valley on the Jordan river border as Jordanian government forces pound Irbid, only twenty miles away.

It is not yet clear under what circumstances the Israeli forces would be put into action in Jordan.

General Moshe Dayan has repeatedly stated that if the present battle in Jordan were to turn to the guerrillas advantage Israel would not intervene unless she felt directly threatened.

Now Israeli Deputy Premier Yigal Allon warned King Hussein on Thursday night (Sept. 24) of strong Israeli retaliation if he allowed the Arab guerrillas to concentrate along the ceasefire lines and attack Israeli settlements.

General Allon said: "Our reaction may be tougher. We shall not make any distinction between the responsibilities of terrorist organisations and the legal authorities of Jordan."
Whilst the civil war in Jordan has split the country in half, the Israeli settlements along the Jordan river have enjoyed their most peaceful week for three years. The sound of gunfire and mortar still echoes in the hills, but for the time being at least the Israeli settlements are not the targets.
