  • Description

One world record was broken on the first day of the 28th World Weightlifting Championships in the Philippines on Saturday (21 September). Tekeshi Horikoshi of Japan broke his own Flyweight record for the snatch with a lift of 10.5 kilos (234 lbs).

The nine-day competition was officially opened by President Ferdinand Marcos and the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, where the events are staged.

The first day's competition was for Flyweight weightlifters -- up to 52 kilos (114 lbs) -- for both the snatch and jerk.

The gold medal for the Flyweight class was won by Mohamed Nassiri of Iran who lifted a total of 232.5 kilos (511.5 lbs) -- 100 kilos (220 lbs) in the snatch and 132.5 kilos (291.5 lbs) in the jerk.

Second was Gyorgy Koszegei from Hungary with a total of 230 kilos (506 lbs) -- 105 kilos (231 lbs) in the snatch and 125 kilos (275 lbs) in the jerk.

Although Horikoshi broke the world record for the Flyweight snatch contest he could only manage third place overall. His record breaking lift of 106.59 kilos (234.4 pounds) was made on his fourth attempt. In the competition, the weight lifted in the first three attempts only is counted. For these Horikoshi was credited with 105 kilos (231 pounds). In the jerk he managed 122.5 kilos (269.5) to give a total of 227.5 kilos (500.5 pounds) to receive the bronze medal.

New ground is being broken in two directions in these competitions. It is the first time a team from The People's Republic of China has competed in a World Weightlifting Championship, and is also the first time the contest has been held in South East Asia.

The decision to admit The People's Republic of China to the contest was made by a narrow 19-15 vote at a meeting of the International Weightlifting Federation on the eve of the contest.
