  • Description

Four people were killed and at least six injured when a car left the track and ran into
spectators at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona on Sunday (27 April).

The thirty-one-year-old West German, Rolf Stommelen, driving a Hill-Lola, led
the field to the first bend of the 26th lap when the tail wing of his car flew
off, sending him out of control and into the crowd. Stommelen was taken to
hospital with a broken leg and other injuries.

The Brazilian driver, Carlos Pace, who was close behind Stommelen, was also
    injured in the accident.

An Italian photographer and a Spanish fireman were among the four killed.

The condition of the six injured was not immediately known.

The race was packed with incident with Austria's Niki Lauda holding the pole
position -- being put out at the start when he collided with the Swiss, Clay
    Regazzoni.

Earlier, world Formula One Champion Emerson Fittipaldi led a protest by drivers
about safety precautions on the Montjuich circuit.

Most of the drivers at first refused to take their cars out because they said
several sections of the track were a danger to spectators and drivers.

The race was abandoned after the accident.
