Background: Hundreds of thousands of grief-stricken Egyptians gathered in the streets of Cairo on Tuesday (29 September) in a massive demonstration of sorrow for their lost leader, President Gamal Abdel Nasser.

As news of President Nasser's death spread the ranks of the stunned mourners swelled dramatically, until all roads to the former royal palace were completely blocked.

Wailing crowds assembled in front of the Kubbeh Republican Palace, on the outskirts of the city, where the body of the 52-year-old leader is laying in state.

The Egyptian government's reaction to the announcement of President Nasser's sudden death was to declare a state of "utmost emergency" among the Egyptian armed forces stationed along the Suez canal frontline.
