    THE SOVIET WAR MEMORIAL - WHICH STANDS IN WEST BERLIN, ABOUT 300 YARDS FROM THE BRANDENBURG GATE - WAS CORDONED OF BY BRITISH TROOPS, AUG 17. THERE HAD BEEN MINOR INCIDENTS EARLIER IN THE WEEK, WHEN WEST BERLINERS SHOUTED INSULTS AT THE RUSSIAN GUARDS ON DAY AND NIGHT DUTY.

    A PLATOON OF THE GREEN JACKETS, THE KING'S ROYAL RIFLE CORPS, ARE NOW GUARDING THE MEMORIAL BEHIND A TRIPLE BARRIER OF BARBED WIRE. THE PERIMETER IS ABOUT 1,000 YARDS, AND THERE IS A SMALL ENTRY AT THE BACK OF THE STONE MONUMENT FOR THE RUSSIAN GUARDS. THE MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FALL OF BERLIN, ON A SITE WHICH SUBSEQUENTLY CAME UNDER BRITISH ADMINISTRATION.

    EARLIER ON AUG 17, A BRITISH MILITARY POLICE PATROL WAS DETAINED BY ARMED EAST BERLIN BORDER GUARDS AND RELEASED AFTER THREE HOURS' INTERROGATION. A BRITISH SPOKESMAN SAID THE INCIDENT, WHICH WAS NOT CONSIDERED SERIOUS, OCCURRED AT A POINT WHERE THE SECTOR BOUNDARY WAS NOT CLEARLY MARKED.
