  • Description

AIRCRAFT WORKERS AT THE BRISTOL-SIDDELEY AIRCRAFT FACTORY IN BRISTOL, ON ENGLAND'S WEST COST, HAVE JOINED IN THE HUNT FOR A SABOTEUR WHO TRIED TO DELAY PRODUCTION OF THE SUPERSONIC CONCORDE AIRLINER. AN IMPORTANT ENGINE PART WAS FOUND SMASHED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) IN A MACHINE SHOP AT THE FACTORY.

THE SMASHED ENGINE PART WAS FOUND WITH A HAMMER LYING NEARBY. WITH THE HAMMER WAS A NOTE SAYING: "THIS IS THE MALLET WHICH DID THE JOB. I WISH I COULD BE HERE TO SEE THE FUN." BOTH THE WORKERS AND MANAGEMENT ARE FURIOUS AT THE SABOTAGE AND ARE DETERMINED THAT THE CONCORDE -- AN ANGLO-FRENCH PROJECT -- SHALL MEET ITS DELIVERY DATE.

THE 1,500-MILES-AN-HOUR (2,400 KMS) CONCORDE -- THREE YEARS AHEAD OF ITS NEAREST AMERICAN RIVAL -- IS DUE TO MAKE ITS FIRST FLIGHT IN 21 MONTHS TIME. ABOUT 60 OF THE PLANES HAVE BEEN ORDERED. YESTERDAY'S SABOTAGE MEANS THAT WORK WILL BE HELD UP ON THE ENGINE -- THE OLYMPUS 593. HOWEVER, IT WILL NOT HINDER THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGINE AS A WHOLE.

SECURITY MEN INVESTIGATING THE SABOTAGE ARE BEING GIVEN THE WHOLE-HEARTED SUPPORT OF THE UNION OFFICIALS AND WORKERS. ALL MEN WHO WORK IN THE MACHINE SHOP CONCERNED ARE BEING QUESTIONED.
