    THE CYPRUS PRESIDENT, ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, YESTERDAY OPENED A MEETING OF CHURCHMEN AND REFUGEE RELIEF WORKERS, ORGANISED BY THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES AND THE NEAR EAST COUNCIL OF CHURCHES. THE MEETING, WHICH CONTINUES UNTIL 4 OCTOBER, IS DISCUSSING CHURCH AID TO MIDDLE EAST REFUGEES.

    SOME I-HUNDRED DELEGATES FROM CHURCHES THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND WESTERN COUNTRIES AND FROM RELIEF ORGANISATIONS ARE ATTENDING THE MEETING.

    SESSIONS WILL BE HELD IN PRIVATE, BUT A PRESS STATEMENT IS TO BE ISSUED ON SATURDAY WHEN THEY END.

    DR. EUGENE CARSON BLAKE, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES, WELCOMED ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS TO THE FIRST MEETING, THE ARCHBISHOP SAID: "WE MAY CONTRIBUTE NOT ONLY IN THE RELIEF OF THE SUFFERING OF THE REFUGEES, BUT ALSO IN THE CREATION OF CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE POLITICAL CONFLICT COULD MORE READILY APPROACH A SOLUTION".

    CHURCH REFUGEE AID IS ALREADY AVERAGING ABOUT US$750-THOUSAND (GBP312,500 STERLING) A YEAR IN CASH, APART FROM RELIEF MATERIALS. THEY ALSO RAISED AN EXTRA US$2-MILLION (ABOUT GBP833-THOUSAND STERLING) AFTER THE SIX-DAY WAR IN JUNE, 1967.
