    Right-wing Lebanese Militias said in Bierut on Tuesday (6 March) that a woman had been killed, and eight civilians wounded, when Syrian troops shelled the south-eastern suburbs of the town during the night.

    SYNOPSIS: In a statement the Militia command accused the Syrians of bombarding several areas with tanks, field guns and heavy mortars. There was no immediate response from the Syrian-dominated Arab Deterrent Force (ADF).

    There have been several clashes with the mainly Christian Militias since a ceasefire ended a two week battle in the Capital last October.

    According to residents in the area, There were loud explosions and sustained bursts of heavy machine-gun fire for about three hours. Each side has accused the other of provoking the clash.

    The clashes have provoked considerable tension in the city and in other parts of Lebanon. Also on Monday night (5 March) according to Reuters news agency, the Palestinian-leftist stronghold of Nabatiyeh and some other towns in South Lebanon came under Israeli and rightist Militia artillery fire, and Israeli planes flew low over the area. In the last week, incidents have been reported almost nightly.

    In the atmosphere of tension that exists in Beirut, shoppers avoid the night hours but generally the people of the city attempt to pursue their normal occupations.
