Background: MASAHIKO "FIGHTING" HARADA OF JAPAN, FORMER WORLD FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION, BROUGHT OFF ONE OF THE BIGGEST BOXING UPSETS FOR YEARS WHEN HE OUTPOINTED EDER JOFRE (BRAZIL) TO WIN THE WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE AT NAGOYA, JAPAN ON TUESDAY. THE JAPANESE BOXER HARASSED JOFRE THROUGHOUT THE 15 ROUNDS TO TAKE THE CROWN FROM THE BRAZILIAN WHO HAS BEEN CHAMPION SINCE 1961.

HARADA MAINTAINED A NON-STOP ATTACK, MAINLY TO THE BODY, TO KEEP JOFRE BACKING TO THE ROPES FOR MOST OF THE BOUT. THE BRAZILIAN WAS UNMARKED, BUT COULD NOT BRING HIS POWERFUL UPPERCUT INTO EFFECT AS THE YOUNG JAPANESE BOBBED AND WEAVED TO EVADE THE CHAMPION'S HEAVY PUNCHES.

THE DEFEAT OF THE 29 YEAR-OLD JOFRE WAS HIS FIRST LOSS IN 51 PROFESSIONAL BOUTS. THE BRAZILIAN WAS CONSIDERED ALMOST UNBEATABLE AND WENT INTO THE RING A HOT FAVOURITE TO WIN INSIDE EIGHT ROUNDS AFTER SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDING THE TITLE ON SEVEN PREVIOUS OCCASIONS.

THE CAPACITY 12,000 CROWD WHO PACKED THE NAGOYA PREFECTURAL GYMNASIUM, ROARED DEAFENINGLY FOR FIVE MINUTES AFTER AMERICAN REFEREE BARNEY ROSS, FORMER WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT AND WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION, HAD RAISED THE 22 YEAR-OLD HARADA'S HAND IN VICTORY.

(HARADA TURNED BANTAMWEIGHT AFTER LOSING HIS WORLD FLYWEIGHT TITLE TO FROM KINGPETCH, OF THAILAND IN JANUARY 1963. THE JAPANESE HAD WON THE TITLE FROM KINGPETCH FOUR MONTHS EARLIER.)
