  • Description

MALAWI HAS BEEN MENTIONED AS A POSSIBLE NEUTRAL MEETING-PLACE FOR TALKS BETWEEN BRITISH AND RHODESIAN ENVOYS TO FIND A SOLUTION TO PROBLEMS EMANATING FROM U.D.I. THIS POSSIBILITY WAS RAISED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) DURING THE PRIVATE VISITS TO SALISBURY, RHODESIA, OF FOUR BRITISH POLITICIANS.

THE POLITICIANS ARE SIR GODFREY NICHOLSON (CONSERVATIVE, FARNHAM), MR. REGINALD PAGET (LABOUR, NORTHAMPTON), MR. PETER BESSELL (LIBERAL, BODMIN) AND MR. EVELYN KING (CONSERVATIVE, DORSET).

MR. KING, WHO ARRIVED AFTER HIS COLLEAGUES, MENTIONED THE POSSIBILITY OF MALAWI DISCUSSION. DR. BANDA, THE MALAWI PRIME MINISTER IS UNDERSTOOD TO BE WILLING TO BE HOST AT ANY ATTEMPT AT MEDIATION. MR. KING SAID THAT ALTHOUGH HIS VISIT RHODESIA WAS UNOFFICIAL, IT HAD THE BLESSING OF MR. BOTTOMLEY, COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, WHOM HE WILL SEE ON HIS RETURN TO LONDON.

MR. PAGET TOLD NEWSMEN THAT, IN HIS OPINION, BRITAIN AND RHODESIA WERE PURSUING POLICIES HARMFUL TO EACH OTHER AND TO A "THIRD PARTY" -- TAKEN TO MEAN ZAMBIA.

SIR GODFREY NICHOLSON SAID HE FELT THERE WAS A "TOTALLY UNNECESSARY DEADLOCK" OVER THE RHODESIAN ISSUE. BOTH M.P.'s SAID THEY WERE AGAINST TOP LEVEL CONFERENCE UNLESS ADVANCE PLANNING MEANT VIRTUAL AGREEMENT BEING REACHED. THEY SUGGESTED A MEETING OF ENVOYS ON NEUTRAL GROUND TO PREPARE THE WAY.

SIR GODFREY AND MR. PAGET SAID THEY HOPED TO MEET A CROSS SECTION OF THE RHODESIAN COMMUNITY INCLUDING THE GOVERNOR, SIR HUMPHREY GIBBS, REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CHURCH, EDUCATION, BUSINESS, INDUSTRY AND THE PROFESSIONS. MR. PIETER VAN DER BYL, AN OFFICIAL HANDLING INFORMATION FOR THE SMITH REGIME, SAID THE BRITISH POLITICIANS WERE BEING WELCOMED "WITH NORMAL RHODESIAN HOSPITALITY."
