SYNOPSIS: The arrival of Governor-General Sir Oliver Gonnetilleke was the go-ahead signal for Ceylon's eleventh independence day celebrations.

Sir Oliver, dressed in his immaculate uniform and plumed hat took the salute from a raised platform as twentyone guns thundered a Royal Salute.

At Ceylon's Galle Face Green were the diplomatic corps in natty harringhones or in grey and light toppers to watch the parade and march past.

As the Governor-General inspected the smartly turned out Army units, all eyes were on the armed forces of the country. For they were responsible for keeping law and order during the worst communal disorders in the country a little over a year ago.

Later in the day formal ceremonies gave way to people's celebrations. There were the young Kandyan dancers doing the sword dance to the rhythmic beat of the drummers. "Masters" of the profession in their intricate head-dress were there to lead and guide the youngsters.

The fair sex had their share of the celebrations too. Young school girls dressed in the national costume of blouse and long skirts danced to the tinkling of the locally-made musical instruments.

These women are displaying their skill at the "pot dancing" balancing the pot on their hands as they dance away merrily.

The sight of these girls displaying their skill must have been a thrilling sight to the thousands who lined up Colombo's street to partake in the celebrations of Ceylon's eleventh independence day.
