• Short Summary

THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION CHOOSE SENATOR HUBERT HUMPHREY OF MINNESOTA (MID-WESTERN U.S.) AS THE DEMOCRATIC?

  • Description

THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION CHOOSE SENATOR HUBERT HUMPHREY OF MINNESOTA (MID-WESTERN U.S.) AS THE DEMOCRATIC VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE.

THOUGH THE PRESIDENTS' CHOICE FOR A RUNNING MATE IN THE FORTH-COMING GENERAL ELECTIONS CAME AS NO SURPRISE HIS APPEARANCE AT THE CONVENTION WAS VERY MUCH A SURPRISE. ORIGINALLY, HE HAD PLANNED TO COME TO ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY -- THE SITE OF THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION ON THURSDAY (27 AUGUST) TO MAKE HIS NOMINATION ACCEPTANCE SPEECH.

HUMPHREY IS A STRONG ADVOCATE TO CIVIL RIGHTS, MOST OF THE SOUTHERN DELEGATIONS SAID THEY WOULD SUPPORT THE JOHNSON-HUMPHREY TICKET. HOWEVER, SEVERAL SOUTHERN DELEGATES EXPRESSED SOME DISAPPOINTMENT OVER THE SELECTION OF HUMPHREY. THEY SAID THAT HUMPHREY'S RECORD IN THE FIELD OF CIVIL RIGHTS WILL MAKE THEIR JOB MORE DIFFICULT IN TRYING TO PERSUADE THE PEOPLE OF THEIR STATES TO VOTE FOR THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC TICKET.
