  • Description

The former Kaiser Wilhelm Channel, now called the Nord Oat Sea Kanal, now exceeds both the Suez and Panama canals in total tonnage passed through the waterway.

Our cameramen went, along to the eastern entrance near Kiel, and watched the Holtenau Sluice in operation and the long line of merchant vessels of all sizes and nations passing through the channel.

The sluice operation is centralised in a control office under the command of a sluice master.

The channel connects the East Sea with the North Sea between Kiel and Brunsbuttelkoog.

Kiel, during the war a major Nazi naval base, is now transformed into a base for peaceful maritime pursuits.
