TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 3): RICA HODGSON: LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICA HAD BECOME INTOLERABLE. BUT WITH ONE RESTRICTION AFTER ANOTHER PLACED US, IT WAS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM IN OUR OWN COUNTRY. WE COULD NO LONGER EVEN WORK OR LIVE ANY KIND OF NORMAL LIFE. IT WAS DECIDED - IT WAS NOT A PERSONAL DECISION ON OUR PART - THAT WE SHOULD LEAVE AND COME TO BECHUANALAND. WE LIKE THE CLIMATE HERE AND ARE SURE THAT WE SHALL BE VERY HAPPY

TRANSCRIPT: JACK HODGSON: WE HAVE BEEN RECEIVED WITH HOSPITALITY BY THE PEOPLE OF BECHUANALAND. RICA AND I HOPE TO REMAIN HERE AND TO FIND WORK AND SETTLE DOWN. WE DO NOT INTEND TO PARTICIPATES IN LOCAL POLITICS. WE WILL ALWAYS BE KEENLY INTERESTED IN WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SOUTH AFRICA, AND WE WILL DO OUR UTMOST TO ASSIST IN THE OVERTHROW OF VERWOERD'S POLICE STATE.

Background: THREE CONVICTED WHITE SOUTH AFRICANS SENTENCED TO HOUSE-ARREST ESCAPED TO BECHUANALAND ON WEDNESDAY. THEY ARE MICHAEL HARMEL, JACK HODGSON AND HIS WIFE, RICA.

THE MANAGER OF THE LOBATSI HOTEL SAID THAT THE HODGSONS AND MR. HARMEL ARRIVED ABOUT LUNCHTIME IN A SMALL CAR. THEY TOOK A FLAT NEAR THE HOTEL AND ARE HAVING THEIR MEALS THERE BUT GAVE NO INDICATION HOW LONG THEY INTEND REMAINING.

WALKING THROUGH LOBATSI AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL THEY ENJOYED UNFAMILIAR FREEDOM LOOKING IN SHOPS, WHERE MRS. RICA HODGSON TRIED ON A HAT. THEY GAVE OUR REPORTER THE REASON FOR LEAVING SOUTH AFRICA:
(LAST NOVEMBER MR. HODGSON AND MR MICHAEL HARMEL WERE SERVED NOTICES FORBIDDING THEM TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES FOR FIVE YEARS. THEY WERE FORBIDDEN TO GO TO WORK, RECEIVE VISITORS - EXCEPT DOCTORS AND MINISTERS OF RELIGION. MR HODGSON'S WIFE WAS PLACED UNDER A 12-HOUR HOUSE-ARREST ORDER, ITS OBJECT, - LIKE THAT PLACED ON HER HUSBAND - WAS TO PREVENT HER MIXING WITH POLITICAL UNDESIRABLES. ON 29 APRIL THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT PASSED A NEW SECURITY BILL WHICH EMPOWERS THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE TO KEEP IN PRISON PERSONS CONVICTED OF CRIMES AGAINST THE STATE ALTHOUGH THEIR SENTENCED HAVE EXPIRED.)
