The first Mediterranean Congress of Consumers unions is being held in Athens from 28 - 30 March and is organized by the I.O.C.U. (International Organization of Consumers Unions). The congress was opened today by Commerce Undersecretary Mr. George Panayotopoulos on behalf of the Greek Government at Athens City Hall. Some 17 countries are represented in this meeting, including UK, France, Germany, Holland Belgium, Italy, USA, Spain, Portugal, Algiers, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Canada, Malaysia, Israel, Greece, etc. Among other personalities who attended the opening of the session of the first Consumers Congress were the Greek Welfare Ministry Undersecretary Mr. Andreas Adrianopoulos, Athens City Mayor, Members of the Greek Parliament from all political parties, as well as well-known members of the I.O.C.U. such as Anthony Dumont, deputy chairman of the B.E.U.C. (European Consumers Unions Bureau), Willy Van Rijckghem, president of the I.O.C.U., Colston Warne, "father" and president of the Consumers Unions of the USA, Jan Van Veen (I.O.C.U.), Gilbert Castalein (B.E.U.C.), Eirlys Roberts (B.E.U.C.), Yves Genin, Karen Moeler, Alma Williams, etc.
It is noteworthy that the I.O.C.U. is linked with UNESCO, UNICEF, FAO, ECOSOC, WHO, ISO, I.E.C., C.E.P.T. UNIDO, etc., as well as with the Committee for the Consumers protection of the European Council. Among the subjects to be discussed during this meeting are the following: a) the protection of the world consumers, b) the setting up of a research program, c) the self-organization of the consumers, d) the exchange of useful infirmations between the Unions, e) the possibility of an international cooperation of the Unions of Consumers, etc.
