  • Description

While the world's attention focuses on the fragile peace in Vietnam, war continues in the Khmer Republic.

Communist forces have been maintaining their pressure on the capital of Phnom Penh, and have cut a supply route for the first time since the government suspended operations last Monday. They closed the road from Khmer's only deep-water sea port, Kompong Som.

Elsewhere in the republic, government soldiers maintain a watchful eye on the countryside.

SYNOPSIS: The Khmer Republic looks peaceful enough, but unlike neighbouring Vietnam, it's still in a state of war.

Government troops hold only about a third of the countryside, and communist pressure is still tight on the capital of Phnom Penh. In their latest action, the communists cut one of Phnom Penh's main supply routes, their first major move since the government decided to suspend operations a week ago. They've closed the road from the republic's only deep-water sea port, Kompong Som. So there's no letting up on vigilance for troops like these, keeping watch forty kilometres from the capital. It's a demanding task, but they know that there's no peace yet in Khmer.
