  • Description

The United states challengers, Bobby Fischer, surprised officials at the World Chess Championships in Iceland on Wednesday (23 August) when he arrived for the seventeenth match of the series a few minutes before the reigning champion, Boris, Spassky of the Soviet Union. Fischer has invariably been late for earlier games for the series.

The match began with Fischer leading Spassky by ten points to seven in the best of 24 series.

Officials have been worried by new demands both Fischer and Spassky for an improvement in playing conditions. As a concession to Fischer, arrangements were made to move the audience from the stage, and new guards were placed on duty to ensure silence during play.

The Soviet side has requested a though check of both the hall, and its fixtures...particularly the chair Fischer uses, and the lighting installed at Fischer's request. The Soviet officials suggest that "electronic devices and chemical substances" may be affecting Spassky's play--an accusation already dismissed as "science fiction" by the united states side.

The seventeenth match ended in a draw.
