    Argentina's Guillermo Vilas, winner of the 1974 Commercial Union Grand Prix Tournament, Continued his run of success by defeating Australian tennis star John Newcombe in the opening match of the Commercial Union Masters' Championship in Melbourne, Australia, on tuesday (10 December).

    The 22-year old South American took only 77 minutes to topple Necombe 6-4, 7-6, who has recently been troubled by a spate of injuries. After the match, Newcombe -- joint favourite for the Masters title with Rumanian Ilie Nastase -- described Vilas as equal to American Jimmy Conners, this year's Wimbledon winner and holder of the United States and Australian titles.

    The Melbourne tournament is being played on a round-robin basis, with the sight players contesting each other in sequence. The four top players at the end of the first round will compete in the semi-finals, and the semi-final winners will go on to play for the title.

    The top eight players int eh Grand Prix placings were eligible to play, but American Jimmy Connors dropped out. He was replaced by Newcombe as a representative of the host country.

    In other first-round matches, Swedish star Bjorn Borg beat New Zealand's Onny Parun 3-6, 6-3, 10-8, Ilie Nastase defeated Raul Ramirez of Mexico 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, and American Harold Solomon went down 6-1, 6-1 to Spain's Manuel Orantes.
