  • Description

South Lebanese Christians are calling on Israel for more protection, following further violations of the truce between the Right-wing Christians and Left-wing Palestinians. On Wednesday (12 October) more than 500 Christians demonstrators gathered at the border -- just over two weeks after Israeli troops withdraw from Southern Lebanon.

SYNOPSIS: The demonstrators came from six Christian villages just inside Southern Lebanon, and they congregated at that part of the border known as the 'Good Fence'.

Chanting men, women and children urged the israeli soldiers watching from the other side of the border to help them. The ceasefire, negotiated by the United Nations, came into effect on September the 26th, but the Lebanese Christians claim they are still being shelled by the rival Leftist Palestinian forces. They called for Israeli troops to return, shouting: "Don't let us get slaughtered", and "Israel do your duty, and protect us".

People wounded in the recent shelling were allowed to cross the border for medical treatment, but the Israeli border guards stayed firmly on their side of the wire. The Palestinian and Leftist forces have been in conflict with the Israeli-backed Christian Lebanese in the area for 11 months, and the ceasefire is extremely fragile. As yet there are no troops of the Arab League peace-keeping force near there because Israel refuses to have Syrian forces within ten miles (17 kilometres) of its northern border.

Israel recently suspended talks with the United States on a peace settlement for southern Lebanon, because of the renewed fighting. But observers say American pressure to have the Palestinians observe the ceasefire would lead further discussions.
