World Cup soccer... and defending champions West Germany gave a hint of their true form?

  • Description

World Cup soccer... and defending champions West Germany gave a hint of their true form on Tuesday (6 June) when the defeated Group Two rivals, Mexico six-nil. It was a morale restoring performance for West Germany who had opened their World Cup defence with a poor, spiritless draw against Poland in the opening game last week. Following their victory, West Germany now head their table and seem certain to qualify for the next round.

SYNOPSIS: The West German manager made three changes from the team that drew with Poland. And the more attacking line-up soon brought results. Dieter Mueller opened the scoring in the 14th minute. And it was his namesake Hans Mueller who put them further ahead on the half-hour following a fine dribble.

Seven minutes later, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge showed the ineffectiveness of the Mexican defence, when he ran from his own half to score the third.

??? ??? ??? ??? ??? the Germans scored again. Hand Flohe took the pass from a free kick, and rifled it home.

In the second half, the Germans pushed the ball around comfortably, as if playing a practice match. And in the 71st minute Rummenigge, one of the new men to be brought into the side, justified his selection with his second goal of the game.

Minutes later, Klaus Fischer almost scored the sixth. Gomez, the substitute Mexican goal-keeper was well beaten, but somehow the ball st???yed out.

Just before the end, Heinz Flohe scored his second and German's sixth to put a seal on the team's performance. And silenced any critics who still doubted their form.
