  • Description

DOGS ARE BEING RECRUITED IN MALAYSIA TO HELP COUNTER INDONESIA'S CONFRONTATION WITH THE FEDERATION. THEY ARE BEING TRAINED AT A SPECIAL CENTRE IN SOUTHERN MALAYA.

SOME DOGS HAVE ALREADY SEEN ACTION, BUT WITH THE CONTINUING CONFRONTATION THEIR RANKS ARE BEING BOLSTERED. THEIR SCHOOL IS AT KOTA TINGGI, AND WAS SET UP IN 1951 BY THE BRITISH ARMY DURING THE MALAYA EMERGENCY. MOST OF THE DOGS -- ALSATIANS AND LABRADORS -- ARE FROM BRITAIN AND THEIR TRAINERS BRITISH ARMY DOG EXPERTS.

OBEDIENCE TRAINING COMES FIRST, LASTING FOUR TO SIX WEEKS. MONTHS OF MORE DETAILED TRAINING FOLLOW, INCLUDING THE ART OF TRACKING, BEFORE THEY QUALIFY AS "WAR DOGS". THE COST OF TRAINING EACH DOG IS ABOUT GBP200 STERLING.

IN THE JUNGLE, EACH TEAM CONSISTS OF TEN MEN AND TWO DOGS -- THE ALSATIAN FOR PATROLLING, THE LABRADOR FOR TRACKING. THE WELL-TRAINED DOG CAN DO THE WORK OF THREE OR FOUR MEN. ITS WORKING LIFE RANGES FROM SIX TO EIGHT YEARS.
