    THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT HAS RELEASED TWENTY-FOUR VIET CONG PRISONERS AT THE HIEN-LUONG BRIDGE ON THE FRONTIER WITH NORTH VIETNAM. THREE OF THE PRISONERS CHOSE TO REMAIN IN THE SOUTH.

    GENERAL NGUYEN CHANH THI REPRESENTED THE SOUTH VIETNAM GOVERNMENT AT THE FRONTIER CEREMONY IN WHICH THE PRISONERS WERE RELEASED. HE SAID THAT ONCE THEY WERE RELEASED THEY WERE FREE TO CROSS THE BRIDGE INTO NORTH VIETNAM TO REJOIN THEIR FAMILIES, OR TO REMAIN IN THE SOUTH. HE SAID THAT IF AT THE LAST MINUTE ANY OF THE PRISONERS WISHED TO CHANGE THEIR MINDS AND REMAIN IN SOUTH VIETNAM; THEY WERE FREE TO DO SO. THREE OF THEM LEFT THEIR COMRADES AND JOINED GENERAL THI ON THE PLATFORM.

    THE REMAINING TWENTY-ONE WERE ESCORTED TO THE BRIDGE. AS THEY WALKED ACROSS IT TOWARDS NORTH VIETNAM, THEY FLUNG BAGS PRESENTED TO THEM BY GENERAL THI INTO THE BEN HAI RIVER.
