  • Description

IN THE ALGERIAN CITY OF ORAN, SPECIAL TRIBUNALS TODAY. (THURSDAY), TRIED MORE OF THE PEOPLE ARRESTED IN TUESDAY'S ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATIONS. ABOUT 300 PEOPLE ARE ON TRIAL AND TO DATE MORE THAN 50 HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO GOAL TERMS RANGING FROM A MONTH TO ONE YEAR.

THE TROUBLE IN ORAN BEGAN LAST SUNDAY AND WAS CLIMATED ON TUESDAY BY A MARCH BY UNEMPLOYED AND ANTI-BEN BELLA ALGERIANS. THEY MANAGED TO HALT PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND STAGED DEMONSTRATIONS OUTSIDE PUBLIC BUILDINGS, SHOUTING SLOGANS IN FAVOUR OF FERHAT ABBAS, THE FORMER LEADER OF THE ALGERIAN PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT.

WHEN POLICE FOUND THEMSELVES UNABLE TO CONTROL THE DEMONSTRATORS, TROOPS WERE CALLED IN. THE RIOTERS DISPERSED AFTER SHOTS WERE FIRED INTO THE AIR. LOCAL AUTHORITIES CLAIM THAT MANY OF THE THREE HUNDRED PEOPLE ARRESTED WERE ARMED WITH BICYCLE CHAINS, ROCKS AND IRON BARS.

THE LATEST REPORTS FROM THE CITY SAY THERE IS LITTLE SIGN OF TUESDAY'S VIOLENCE, ALTHOUGH LOCAL OFFICIALS HAVE NOT MINIMISED THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION. ORAN IS PRESIDENT BEN BELLA'S OWN CONSTITUENCY AS WELL AS THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMIC CAPITAL AND THE SOURCE OF HIS POLITICAL POWER.
