    Background: PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA HAS OFFICIALLY OPENED ZAMBIA'S FIRST TYRE FACTORY, AT NOOLA, THE FACTORY, WHICH IS PART OF THE DUNLOP WORLDWIDE ORGANISATION, IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST INDUSTRIAL CENTRES IN ZAMBIA.

    AMONG OFFICIAL GUESTS WERE THE DIRECTOR OF THE DUNLOP COMPANY IN LONDON, MR. J.M. SIMON; AND THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF DUNLOP ZAMBIA, MR. R.C. WOODWARD. MR. WOODWARD SAID THAT THE ZAMBIA COMPANY WAS REGISTERED IN JANUARY, 1964, AND THE SITE FOR THE FACTORY WAS OPERATED IN SEPTEMBER 1967.

    THE FIRST TYRE WAS PRODUCED IN NOVEMBER LAST YEAR. ACCORDING TO MR. WOODWARD THE FACTORY WAS DESIGNED TO MEET THE BULK OF ZAMBIA'S REQUIREMENTS AND IT HAS A CAPACITY OF 120,000 CAR AND TRUCK TYRES, HALF-A-MILLION BICYCLE TYRES AND THREE-QUARTERS-OF-A-MILLION TUBES A YEAR.

    MR. SIMON STRESSED THAT ALTHOUGH THE FACTORY BELONGED TO THE COMPANY, IT ALSO BELONGED TO ZAMBIA. THE FACTORY BUILDING COVER THREE ACRES.

    AFTER UNVEILING A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE, PRESIDENT KAUNDA WAS TAKEN ON A TOUR OF THE FACTORY.
