Background: Tennis...and Chris Evert of the United States took first prize in one of the world's richest ever tournaments when she beat the Czech player Martina Navratilova in the final of the Emeron Cup in Tokyo on Sunday (17 December). Virginia Wade of Great Britain took third place beating Australian, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley.

SYNOPSIS: The play-off for third place. Evonne Goolagong-Cawley serves to last year's Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade. A sixteen shot rally developed before Miss Wade netted her backhand and the first set went to a tie breaker.

Miss Wade went on to win the set when the Australian smashed her forehand return out of court.

Miss Wade broke service in the second set and this backhand volley won her the match seven-six, six-four and thirty thousand and dollars (US). Mrs. Goolagong-Cawley won twenty thousand dollars (US).

In the final, Martina Navratilova started well and was soon ahead in the first set.

But Miss Evert's fighting spirit came to the fore and she won a series of games.

Miss Navratilova was upset by a linesman's call earlier in the set and this seemed to affect her game. A baseline rally developed at set point to Miss Evert. The American was playing aggressively and with great skill. As Miss Navratilova came to the net, Miss Evert took the set with a fine backhand passing shot.

Miss Evert overwhelmed Miss Navratilova in the second set to win seven-five, six-two. She won one hundred thousand dollars (US). Miss Navratilova's consolation was fifty thousand dollars (US).
