    JAPANESE POLICE RIOT SQUADS CLASHED FIERCELY WITH MILITANT LEFT-WING JAPANESE STUDENTS AT THE TOKYO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ON WEDNESDAY (17 FEB).THE CLASH WAS SAID TO BE THE MOST VIOLENT OUTBREAK OR RIOTING SINCE THE 1960 DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE JAPAN-UNITED STATES SECURITY TREATY.

    IN A RUNNING BATTLE, THE STUDENTS HURIED ROCKS.BOTH THE POLICE AND STUDENTS SUFFERED HEAVY CASUALTIES.POLICE ARRESTED ABOUT 50 STUDENTS AFTER THEY HAD STAGED A PIERCE SNAKE-DANCE DEMONSTRATION.THE CLASH LASTED FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES.

    THE STUDENTS, BELONGING TO ZENGAKUREN (NATIONAL FEDERATION OF STUDENTS SELF-GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATIONS) WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE DEPARTURE OF THE JAPANESE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR.ETSUSABURO SHIINA, FOR SEOUL, TO SPEED TALKS ON NORMALISING RELATIONS BETWEEN JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA.DESPITE THE MELEE, MR.SHIINA ARRIVED AT THE AIRPORT UNHINDERED AND BOARDED A PLANE FOR SEOUL.

    TWO HOURS LATER, MR.SHIINA ARRIVED IN SEOUL AND SAID HE HOPED HIS VISIT WOULD CONTRIBUTE TO FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN HIS COUNTRY AND SOUTH KOREA AND HELP BRING ABOUT EARLY NORMALISATION OF RELATIONS.

    AS MR.SHIINA DROVE TO A DOWNTOWN HOTEL, ABOUT 30 YOUNG KOREAN STUDENTS HURIED EGGS AT HIS CAR AND SHOWERED IT WITH HUNDRED OF LEAFLETS DENOUNCING NORMALISATION TALKS.THE HOTEL IS GUARDED BY ABOUT 150 POLICEMEN.
