    MR. DUNCAN SANDYS, THE COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS SECRETARY, UNEXPECTEDLY ARRIVED IN NICOSIA YESTERDAY BY AIR. WITHIN A FEW HOURS OF HIS DECISION TO FLY TO CYPRUS HE WAS HAVING TALKS WITH PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AND DR. KUTCHUK, THE TURKISH VICE-PRESIDENT.

    AT A PRESS CONFERENCE MR. SANDYS SAID: "I CAME OUT HERE REALLY ON WHAT YOU MIGHT CALL A PERSONAL RECONNAISSANCE TO SIZE UP THE SITUATION AND SEE WHAT KIND OF HELP WE MIGHT GIVE IN RESTORING CALM." HE SAID HIS FIRST TASK WAS TO IRON OUT THE PRACTICAL DIFFICULTIES THAT HAVE ARISEN IN SECURING EFFECTIVE JOINT COMMAND OF THE ANGLO-TURKISH-GREEK "TRUCE FORCE".

    PRESIDENT MAKARIOS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) OFFICIATED AT A "MARTYRS' FUNERAL" OF SIX GREEK CYPRIOTS KILLED DURING THE FIGHTING IN NICOSIA. THOUSANDS OF GREEKS CROWDED THE CHURCH TO HEAR THE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, MR. POLYCARPOS GEORGADJIS, SAY TO THE DEAD: "WE SHALL FINISH THE WORK YOU HAVE BEGUN AND WE TAKE AN OATH TO CONTINUE THE STRUGGLE FOR COMPLETE FREEDOM."
    MEN FAINTED AND EMOTIONS RAN HIGH DURING THE SERVICE WHICH FOLLOWED AN ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION FOR PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AND THE MINISTER. SIX OTHER GREEK CYPRIOT VICTIMS OF THE FIGHTING WERE EARLIER IN THE DAY TAKEN TO THEIR NATIVE VILLAGES FOR BURIAL.
