  • Description

A Spanish girl, 20-year-old Senorita Amparo Munoz, was crowned Miss. Universe 1974 at a glittering ceremony in the new Folk Arts Theatre in Manila, capital of the Philippines, on Sunday (21 July). She is the first Spanish girl ever to win the title.

Senorita Munoz lives in Malaga, and her vital statistics were given as 33-22-33 (84-56-84 cms). An estimated television audience of 500 million saw last year's Miss Universe, Maria Moran of the Philippines, crown her successor.

From the 65 original contestants, the judges chose twelve finalists. Each was asked a question and Senorita Munoz, in reply to being asked how she would react to being an international celebrity, said her basic attitudes would not change. She would continue to love her fellow-men!
The prizes she won included 10,000 U.S. dollars in cash (about GBP 4,000 sterling), a 10,000 dollar contract, a car, a special gift of a statue from the First Lady, Mrs. Imelda Marcos, and the exclusive use of an island in the Philippines re-names Miss. Universe Island, which was donated by a Filipino businessman.

The runners-up to Senorita Munoz, were Helen Morgan of Wales, U.K., second, and Johanna Rauno of Finland, third. Miss. Rauno had earlier been named "Miss Photogenic" by the news photographers attending the competition.
