  • Description

Fencing -- and in London competitors from twelve countries have been taking part in this year's Challenge Martini International Epee competition.

SYNOPSIS: The finals were held at the Seymour Hall on Saturday (3 March) -- when Suchanecki of Switzerland met Lenglet of France. Earlier Suchanecki had beaten last year's winner, Frenchman P. Boisse, in the semi-final.

In the final it was obvious the Swiss was in champion from. The epee is a duelling sword, hits are scored with the point only, but the target includes every part of the fencer and has equipment.

Lenglet managed to take a point or two off Suchanecki, but the outcome of the match was never seriously in doubt. Since 1960 France has won the Martini trophy five times, while Switzerland has taken it only once before -- when M. Poffet won in 1974. After some spirited fencing Suchanecki joined his compatriot in the roll of honour.

Fencing has a long history and centuries of tradition behind it. So too, it would seem do the congratulations accorded to the winner. This competition was held under the auspices of the British Amateur Fencing Association and is an annual event.
