  • Description

Demonstrators in France and Italy clashed with police during protests on Tuesday (29 December) calling for the commutation of the death sentences passed on six Basques nationalists in Spain. The protests, in Bayonne and Rome, came on the evening before General Franco announced that the sentences had been commuted to 30 years imprisonment.

In Bayonne, just across the border from Spain and the headquarters of the exiled Basque movement, armed riot police were in action, to control the crowds. There were several arrests and bombs thrown.

The protestors in Rome gathered outside the Spanish embassy and chanted anti-Franco slogans. The thousand or so demonstrators had marched to the building from Spanish Government offices in the Vatican.

A home made bomb was thrown at the Spanish consulate but caused no damage. Police made several arrests before order was restored.
