  • Description

Mauritania signed a peace agreement last night (5 August) with the Polisario guerrilla movement in which it renounced all claims to the southern half of the Western Sahara. The Polisario Front has been fighting Mauritania and Morocco for independence since 1976 when the Western Sahara was ceded to the two countries by Spain.

SYNOPSIS: The agreement was signed after three days of negotiations in Algiers by Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmed Ould Sidi, Second Vice President of the Mauritanian Ruling Military Committee and the Polisario's deputy Secretary-General ??? Mustafa Sayed. Under the agreement Mauritania has pledged to withdraw from the disputed phosphate-rich territory. But the bloody desert war is not over yet. Morocco is still laying claims to the territory and shows no sign of giving up the struggle. Indeed Moroccan Foreign Minister M'hamed Boucetta warned Mauritania that it would have to take steps to ensure its security if Mauritania were to withdraw its forces.
