AND THROUGHOUT AFRICA, STATESMEN PAID TRIBUTE TO THE 65-YEAR-OLD LEADER, WHO HAD BEEN RECEIVING TREATMENT IN PARIS FOR AN UNSPECIFIED DISEASE FOR JUST OVER A YEAR.

    PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SPENT A FEW MINUTES IN THE GROUND FLOOR OF THE GABON EMBASSY WHERE LAY PRESIDENT MBA'S REMAINS. ACCOMPANYING THE FRENCH PRESIDENT WAS M. JACQUES FOCCART, SECRETARY GENERAL FOR AFRICAN AND MALAGASY AFFAIRS, AND M. YVON BOURGES, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR COOPERATION.

    AT A CABINET MEETING EARLIER TODAY (WEDNESDAY), THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT PAID HOMAGE TO PRESIDENT MBA. 'HE WAS,' SAID A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN, 'A TRUE FRIEND OF FRANCE.'
    PRESIDENT MBA'S CHILDREN - TWO BOYS AND TWO GIRLS - ALSO VISITED THEIR FATHER'S REMAINS. THEIR ARRIVAL AT THE EMBASSY WAS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDED BY THAT OF THE GUARD OF HONOUR WHICH WILL ACCOMPANY THE BODY UNTIL THE STATE FUNERAL IN LIBREVILLE ON DECEMBER 4. M. BOURGES AND THE FRENCH JUSTICE MINISTER, M. LOUIS JOXE, WILL ATTEND THE FUNERAL.

    IN PRESIDENT MBA'S OWN COUNTRY, VICE-PRESIDENT ALBERT BONGO EXPRESSED GABON'S REACTION IN A NATION-WIDE BROADCAST. 'ALL GABONESE MOURN HIM,' HE SAID, 'IN CLAM AND DIGNITY, CLOSELY UNITED IN THE GRIEF WHICH HAS STRICKEN THEM.' AMONG THE FIRST AFRICAN NATIONS TO SEND EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY WERE CHAD, THE CENTRAFRICAN REPUBLIC, DAHOMEY, THE IVORY COAST, AN MADAGASCAR.
