  • Description

Poland's Asian and Pacific Museum, set up four years ago has no permanent home yet, but its continuing exhibition of art treasures at the State Archaeological Museum in the Polish capital, Warsaw, attracts a steady flow of visitors, young and old.

SYNOPSIS: The museum was set up in 1973 after Poland's ambassador to Nepal, Mr. Andrzej Wawrzyniak donated his extensive collection of ethnic, folk and religious art from the islands of Indonesia and Nusa Tenggara to the state. He had been collecting many years and the collection includes many rare items that cannot be seen anywhere else in the West.

The collection at present includes more than four thousand objects gathered during Mr. Wawrzyniak's travels, both as a diplomat and, before that, as a seaman. As well as religious and tribal objects, there are utilitarian objects, such as these dagger handles from Indonesia which display great craftsmanship. there are also many examples of eastern textiles such as batik. The museum houses one of the largest collections of Batik in Europe.

The founders and directors of the museum intend to develop it into one of the world's foremost research institutions dealing with Eastern art and to expand its collections considerably. Shortly, museum associated will leave on scientific expeditions to Afghanistan and Polynesia.
