  • Description

COMPETITORS IN THE 35TH MONTE CARLO RALLY SUCCESSFULLY OVERCAME SNOW, ICE, AND SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES TODAY (SATURDAY) AS THEY CONTINUED THEIR TWO DAYS AND TWO NIGHTS DRIVE TO THE MEDITERRANEAN SUNSHINE. TONIGHT FEWER THAN TEN OF THE ORIGINAL 192 STARTERS FROM NINE CENTRES WERE REPORTED OUT OF THE RALLY.

THE LOW CASUALTY RATE WAS PROBABLY DUE TO THE CHANGED NATURE OF THE RALLY THIS YEAR. TIME SCHEDULES ON THE RUN TO MONTE CARLO HAVE BEEN EASED AND THE REALLY TOUGH DRIVING WILL COME AFTER THE ARRIVAL IN THE PRINCIPALITY. THEN THERE WILL BE 2,000 KILOMETRES (1,250 MILES) OF MOSTLY FLAT-OUT DRIVING, OFTEN IN DEEP SNOW, IN THE FRENCH ALPS.

EIGHTY-NINE CARS -- THE LONDON, RHEIMS AND BAD-HOMBERG STARTERS PASSED THROUGH BOULOGNE THIS AFTERNOON IN HEAVY SNOWS. THERE HAD BEEN ONLY TWO RETIREMENTS FROM LONDON, ONE FROM RHEIMS AND ONE FROM BAD-HOMBERG.

THE LISBON STARTERS WERE PERHAPS THE LUCKIEST, THEY ENCOUNTERED NO SNOW OR ICE ON THE RUN ACROSS PORTUGAL AND SPAIN TO BAYONNE IN FRANCE. ALL 27 LISBON STARTERS ARE STILL GOING, INCLUDING THE FINN, TIMO MAKENEN, LAST YEAR'S WINNER, BIDDING TO COMPLETE A HAT-TRICK OF MONTE CARLO WINS FOR BRITISH MINI-COOPERS.

THE COMPETITORS FROM ALL THE NINE START POINTS ARE DUE IN MONTE CARLO TOMORROW NIGHT.
