TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: KAUNDA:"I would say that, naturally the reconstruction of the gaze of the nation comes first. I would like to see more emphasis placed on our political programme, that is the constructing...the ideological base of Zambia. You know, nothing works when people don't know what they are doing. I would never like to participate in the relationship of a nation which is just oozing, going around in circles. Therefore, I would emphasise, therefore, I would emphasise, therefore, that the first things we must do is there to try and make it possible for as many Zambians as is humanly possible to understand the basis of their existence, which is the creation of a human states following the path of socialism."

I can't understand how the whole Western outfit can come and tell me, come and tell you, that we are unable to dislodge Smith. It is not possible, because we know the same forces removed Hitler, with all his formidable forces, they removed him. Hitler is not more. It is considered, by any stretch of the imagination, that Britain, ...America, Western Germany, France, Italy -- the whole lot of them -- can fail to dislodge Smith?

Dr. Kaunda was the only candidate for president under the one-party system he introduced six years ago. Observers said Dr. Kaunda, a man with no strong tribal links, was the only leading Zambian politician with the political skill and experience to hold together the seventy-three tribes comprising the country's five and a half million people.

Note: Lead should refer to eve-of-election broadcast but hit second point (above) first. (Homer Priority included only because broadcast was mainly about home affairs in view of election). Introduce clip saying he was asked about his priorities for Zambia in the next years. bf.

Background: The same forces that disposed of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler could dislodge Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith, according to the Zambian President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. Dr. Kaunda expressed this view to a panel of journalists on Zambian television on Sunday (10 December), two days before the national elections in which he is seeking his fourth term in office. Dr. Kaunda said he found it hard to believe that the collective might of the major Western nations would be unable to get rid of Mr. Smith.

Clip is from a Meet the Press style programme broadcast by Zambia Television. (ZAMBIA BROADCASTING SERVICES is correct title) on Sunday/10.

President was invited to discuss with local journalists the way he sees things at home and abroad during the next five years - this obviously in view of today's election in which he the only candidate. (ZBS is government-run).

Clips taken concern 1. wishy-washy bit about his priority at home -people understand what their lives are about. 2. better bit about the end of the Smith regime (says incredible that west could not oust him if wanted to - they got rid of Hitler....).

SYNOPSIS: The panel began by asking Dr. Kaunda his priorities in the next five years for the country he has led since 1964.
