  • Description

About 3000 demonstrators marched on the Israeli Prime Minister's officer and residence in Jerusalem on Wednesday (29 January) to demand the right to settle in israeli-held Arab areas.

The demonstrators were met at the Prime Minister's residence by a police cordon which turned them aside.

Most of the demonstrators belong to a group called "Emunim" (The Faithful) who want to see Israel's borders extended to encompass the historical, biblical, boundaries of the country.

The group has been successful in the past. It is led by Rabbi Levinger who founded the group when it occupied the village of Kiryat Arab near the town of Herbon despite the disapproval of Mrs. Golda Meir's government, which was then in power.

At first the settlement was opposed by the government but gradually policy changed and the government began to support the settlement with aid and cash.
