  • Description

PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH OF NORTH VIETNAM AND OTHER HIGH-RANKING MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT IN HANOI ATTENDED A RECEPTION AT THE SOVIET EMBASSY ON THE 7TH OF THIS MONTH TO CELEBRATE THE RUSSIAN OCTOBER REVOLUTION. AS THE CHINESE AMBASSADOR, CHU CHI WEN, AND OTHER GUESTS LOOKED ON, THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR, MR. BAKOV, AND THE NORTH VIETNAMESE DRANK TOASTS TO THE CONTINUING FRIENDLY RELATIONS BETWEEN THEIR TWO COUNTRIES.

THE RECEPTION CAME THE SAME DAY AS CELEBRATIONS IN MOSCOW, DURING WHICH THE CHINESE CHARGE D'AFFAIRES WALKED OUT WHEN THE SOVIET DEFENCE MINISTER, MARSHAL MALINOVSKY, ACCUSED THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA OF HAMPERING UNITY OF ACTION AGAINST THE AMERICANS IN VIETNAM AND SO "ENCOURAGING UNITED STATES IMPERIALISM" IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT.

NORTH VIETNAMESE GUESTS AT THE SOVIET EMBASSY RECEPTION IN HANOI ALSO INCLUDED THE PRIME MINISTER, PHAN VAN DONG. THE RUSSIAN COSMONAUT, JERMAN TITOV, WAS ALSO PRESENT. BOTH MR. BAKOV AND PHAN VAN DONG MADE SPEECHES, PLEDGING CONTINUING FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THE SOVIET UNION AND NORTH VIETNAM, AND EXPRESSING THEIR COMMON RESOLVE TO DRIVE THE AMERICANS OUT OF VIETNAM.

(MR. BREZHNEV, THE SOVIET COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER, ALSO CRITICISED THE CHINESE ON TUESDAY FOR ALLEGEDLY REFUSING TO CO-OPERATE WITH OTHER COMMUNIST COUNTRIES IN GIVING HELP TO NORTH VIETNAM. THE LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH'S CORRESPONDENT SAID THE SOVIET LEADER SPENT MORE TIME ATTACKING THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA THAN THE UNITED STATES.)
