Background: Jean-Pierre Jarier of France, driving a UOP-Shadow beat the track record and clocked the fastest time during practise for the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos yesterday (Friday, January 24).

With a masterly display of driving, Jarior negotiated the circuit with its sixteen bends in two minutes, 30.3 seconds, outstanding two of the favourites for Sunday's race, Carlos Reutemann of Argentina and world champion Emmerson Fittipaldi of Brazil, who finished the practise session second and third respectively. And after the final practise session today (January 24) Jarier confirmed his fastest time and will line up in pole position for tomorrow's race.

Behind Jarier, Fittipaldi and Reutemann come the Austrian Niki Lauda in a Ferrari, Carlos Pace of Brazil in a Brabham and James Hunt of Britain in a Hesketh.

The Interlagos track is a tricky is a tricky one, with numerous bends and hairpins in its 7,960 metres (yards) length.
