Background: Brazilian Federal Agent Helio Carvalho de Araujo, who was fatally wounded while trying to prevent the kidnapping of the Swiss Ambassador in Rio de Janeiro earlier in the week, was given a state funeral in the city yesterday (Friday). He had been hot three times by kidnappers of Ambassador Giovanni Bucher.

Leading the mourners was the brazilian Vice-President, Admiral Auguste Rademaker. The head of state, President Emilio Garrastazu Medici, issued a statement declaring that the bodyguard had died in the defence of freedom.

It was the second time that a policeman had been shot in Brazil during a diplomatic kidnapping. The first occasion was when terrorists seized West German Ambassador Ehrenfried von Holleben last June.

Despite the wave of the indignation roused by the latest killing, there have been reports that the Brazilian government is rounding up some of the 70 prisoners whose release has been demanded by the Ambassador Bucher's urban guerrilla kidnappers.
