  • Description

The Greek operatic star, Mme Maria Meneghini Callas, got a six minute standing ovation November 7 for her performance in "Medea" a few hours after her dismissal from New York's Metropolitan Opera for this season, then said in an interview S-O-F who was sorry about the Metropolitan's attitude. She wanted to give great art but the Metropolitan had not wanted to co-operate.

She said she was against singing popular opera.

The Metropolitan had said they were grateful that the association was ended with Mme. Callas for this season.

The Met's General Manager Rudolf Bing in announcing the termination of the contract said of Mme Callas, the prima donna of the opera world, that her reputation of projecting her undisputed histrionic talents into her business affairs was common knowledge.

Opera fans were not surprised at Mme Callas's dispute with the Met. They recalled numerous scrapes with opera houses. Earlier this year she walked out on a first-night audience that included the Italian President at the Rome Opera House. Later, after a closing performance at Milan's La Scala she left the stage, declared she was leaving the Scala for good.

In 1957 both the Vienna and the San Francisco Operas dropped her.

But despite her hassles, Mme Callas who is 35 petite and exotic, has met with tremendous acclaim throughout the operatic world.
