    THEIR WITHDRAWAL IS SEEN AS A SIGN OF AMERICA'S FAITH IN THE LAOS AGREEMENT, ALTHOUGH ABOUT THREE-THOUSAND U.S. ARMY AND AIR FORCE PERSONNEL WILL STAY FOR AN UNSPECIFIED PERIOD. THIS IS WHAT REMAINS OF THE 5,000-MAN COMBAT GROUP SENT TO THAILAND AT THE REQUEST OF THE THAI GOVERNMENT IN MAY WHEN IT SEEMED LIKELY THAT PATHET LAO AND VIETNAMESE FORCES MIGHT SPILL OVER THE BORDER INTO THAT COUNTRY.
