    In Taipei more than 300,000 people rallied on Monday to celebrate nationalist China's 66th national day.

    Speaking at a Double Tenth rally President Yen Chai-kan urged the nation to redouble its effort towards national reconstruction.

    "We must be self-reliant and redouble our effort to work for the goals of national reconstruction and to shatter the communist united front intrigue."
    The former Chinese pilot Fan Yuna-yen, who defected to Taiwan with his MIG-19 aircraft on July 7, was widely cheered at the rally.

    After the rally a colourful parade of 10,000 people including cadets of the armed forces academies and student led by a huge National flag carried by 50 men. left the presidential plaza and moved through the main streets of Taipei.

    Taipei official reported some 20,000 overseas Chinese from 69 countries had arrived in Taipei for the National Day celebration-the biggest congregation of overseas Chinese since the Nationalists returned to Taiwan from China in 1949.
