  • Description

AN ESTIMATED 150,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HIT BY FLOODS WASHING ACROSS THE KETA DISTRICT NEAR THE GHANA-TOGO BORDER, AS THE KETA LAGOON CONTINUES TO SPILL FLOOD WATERS THROUGH NUMEROUS TOWNS AND VILLAGES. CROPS AND INDUSTRIES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED AND DAMAGE 10 ROADS AND BRIDGES HAS DISLOCATED COMMUNICATIONS.

KETA HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING SEASON FLOODING FOR YEAR, BUT THIS IS THE WORST DISASTER EVER. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE FLOODING WAS MADE WORSE WHEN ENGINEERS OF THE VOLTA RIVER AUTHORITY DIVERTED WATER FROM THE VOLTA LAKE INTO THE VOLTA RIVER TO AVOID ENDANGERING, BUT WAS BLOCKED BY A SANDBAR WHICH PREVENTED IT FLOWING OUT TO SEA.

THE WORST HIT AREAS OF KETA ARE THE MARKET AREA, BUT FLOODS HAVE PUT ROADS UNDER WATER MAKING TRANSPORTATION OF FOODSTUFFS DIFFICULT.

AMONG THE HOMES DAMAGED IS THAT OF THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE GHANA BROADCASTING CORPORATION, MR. ERIC ADJERLOLE.

THE KODZI BRIDGE LINKING KETA WITH OTHER AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IS ALSO COMPLETELY UNDER WATER, AND ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES ARE BEING FERRIED ACROSS THE VOLTA RIVER.
