  • Description

Nearer home, the latest and perhaps the final count of those killed in last night's collision of a speeding Santa Fe Train and a two-trailer oil rig near Bakers field is 14 -- 14 killed and 72 injured...many seriously and a few critically. Of the 109 aboard the train..bound from San Francisco to Chicago...only 24 escaped unscathed. The last bodies were finally freed from the wreckage today -- brought out by workmen slashing at the charred wreckage with torches, crowbars and crains. Apart from those killed and injured, Santa Fe officials estimate the property loss at over a million dollars. What happened -- why the driver of the oil rig wasn't aware of the approaching train..that will probably never be known. He died in the collision. In all, it took more than fifteen hours to clear the roadbed and replace a quarter-mile of ripped up track. The death toll again -- 14!
