Background: Boxing -- and the British Heavyweight Champion, John Gardner triumphed over Mike Koranicki of the United States at London's Albert Hall on Tuesday (20 February). The referee stopped the fight after the ninth round, declaring Koranicki unfit to continue because, in his view, the fighter's left eye was too severely damaged.

SYNOPSIS: Gardner, in the white trunks, took the fight to his opponent from the very start. But it was to be a toe-to-toe slugging match throughout. For the first three rounds it was the Briton who initiated the action, putting constant pressure on Koranicki who failed to take advantage of his long reach. Then the American seemed to get a better measure of the British champion, shortening his shots and catching him with good punches to the head as Gardner came in close. But it wasn't long before Koranicki was in trouble with a cut over his left eye.

The fifth round clearly went to the American, who showed much more confidence and aggression than earlier, smothering Gardner's shots and scoring well himself. The Briton's relentless slugging, a pattern of short jabs and hooks, seemed to make little impression on the giant American and by the seventh round the fight had developed into something of a stalemate. It was in this round that Koranicki suddenly opened up, scoring two right hand shots followed with a left which stopped Gardner in his tracks. Even so, the American couldn't finish the job and the fight went back toe-to-toe slugging.

But it was Gardner who relentlessly scored in the eighth and ninth, turning the fight his way.

When the referee stopped the fight at the start of the tenth, it was to a chorus of protests from the American's corner and little response from the badly bruised victor.
