  • Description

Over 40,000 Africans gathered at the Colby Community Centre in Blantyre, Aug 14, to hear Dr. Hastings Banda, leader of Nyasaland's Malawi Congress Party, give a report on the results of the Constitutional Talks held in London recently.

In his address the African leader again attacked the African member of the Legislative Council and the chiefs who opposed him at the London talks. The crowd responded to the bitter attack with cries of "Shame" and "Dogs". Most of the speech was a repetition of what he said at the airport on his return, Aug 10, Dr. Banda again pointed out that he had managed to get self-government in all but name.

Due to the poor public address system, only about 10,000 of the throng heard the speech. Police officials stated it was the largest public meeting ever held in the country. The Malawi Party's "Police" took control of the crowd and no incidents were reported.
