  • Description

The ancient Italian city of Siena lives again in the 15th century - for it is "Palio" time again.

This annual event, held in honour of the Virgin Mary, is one of the most colourful in the world, for before the horse race, the main event of the day, representatives of each of the seventeen city districts parade before a crowd of 80,000 spectators.

Dressed in the fashion of 400 years ago they give a fine display as they twirl banners, throwing them high in the air with great skill and dexterity, watching them again in an ever-changing pattern of designs.

Then comes the "Carroccio", a horse-drawn cart carrying an altar, which in turn is followed by the heralds with their silver trumpets.

In the horse-race the competitors - obliged to ride bareback - represent the 17 districts.

The rules for the race over three laps of the beautiful "Campo" square, are the toughest in existence: riders are allowed to use any means, fair or foul, to pass the winning post first. The winner is the first horse to pass the line, whether it has a rider or not.

Rivalry between the districts is keen and jockeys are frequently unseated. As it was quite a long time ago that this year's winning district triumphed, they celebrated on the grand scale.
