  • Description

Argentine police broke into the Peronist headquarters in Buenos Aires on Thursday (24 August) and took away the coffins of three urban guerillas.

The police broke down the door of the building with an armoured car, ordered mourners inside to leave at gunpoint and used teargas against a large crowd gathered outside.

Police took the coffins away for burial.

They contained the bodies of three of the sixteen urban guerillas killed at the Trelew naval airbase in Patagonia last Tuesday (22 August). An official statement said the guerillas were trying to escape.

The guerillas were detained after they helped ten colleagues fly to Chile last week in a hi- jacked airliner.

The killings added to the political unrest in Argentina caused by uncertainty over the return of the former President Juan Peron from exile in Spain to contest the presidency with the incumbent, President Alejandro Lanusse.

The deadline set by President Lanusse for presidential contenders to take up residence in Argentina passed on August 26 without an appearance by Senor peron and he was automatically disqualified.

SYNOPSIS: Later President Lanusse promised to clarify the deaths of the sixteen urban guerillas, while warning of strong measures to curb malcontents.
