  • Description

One of the top London football clubs, Chelsea, today (Saturday) received a shock from Southampton when the London players were held to a two-all home draw. In a scrappy match, both teams missed scoring advantages by careless play.

Southampton's first shock surprise came in the tenth minute when Paine sliced a kick. The ball found Channon, unmarked, and he pushed the ball through the posts past the Chelsea goal-keeper Bonetti.

Chelsea seemed unsettled by the unexpected goal and Southampton's blustering play, but eight minutes after Channon's goal Hollins scored the equaliser for Chelsea -- a long 25 yard kick which spun into the corner of the Southampton goal.

Ten minutes before the close of the match Southampton went ahead with another goal from Channon when he kicked a ball that appeared to deflect into the gaol off a defending player.

With only five minutes of the match left, Chelsea fought back against the constant Southampton pressure and Webb made it a drawn match with Webb finding a weakness in the Southampton goal.
